This is a pretty good guide that covers all the essentials you should know for taking good pictures in general. Although DSLR cameras are becoming more and more popular, one doesn't necessarily need such a high-end a camera to take decent, memorable and well composed pictures at all. Especially so for people with DSLRs and haven't even bothered to learn their features.. I personally know some photographers who regularly take notably beautiful shots on their Point-and-Shoot cameras.
