Android Froyo now on iPhone thru Bootlace!

Good news for iPhone users who've been yearning to get their hands on an Android device (ie. ME) - Hackers have now come up with a way to dual boot Android's latest Froyo OS onto your iOS device (limited to certain devices only - not 3GS or iPhone 4 yet). You will have to jailbreak your phone, but thereafter, installing Froyo will be just like running an App! Simple. It's the marriage of both worlds - Apple brawn and Google brains. Sweet!

Time to get far away from iTunes!
Read the How-To here (@ Redmond Pie) via Engadget.

Potential problems:
1) Button shortage. The last time we saw an Android to iPhone port, the volume buttons were re-purposed to be the Call and Home buttons. Wonder if this remains the same.
2) Does it work fine? See this video to get an idea of how Froyo on iPhone works.
User thealtendorf says that the port is "not recommended for use in day to day, the camera does not work, it is still quite unstable, but with this update method is much easier."

Zippo LED Flashlight

Here's a hack from Instructables via Lifehacker, turning any of your unused Zippo lighters into an LED flashlight. Pretty good for ex-smokers who still want that cool little case to fool around with.

Darn I gotta find my old Zippo now..

Camera Strap Buddy makes cameras easier to carry

This ingeniously simple device makes carrying bulky heavy cameras around your neck a thing of the past. By making use of the tripod screw under the body of your cam, you can now sling your camera messenger-bag style, eliminating the behind-the-neck strain as well as allowing the camera to lie comfortably lens down. Only US$15!

DIY Repair Site

Wired Gadget Lab featured an online gadget-repair website that works like a collaborative wiki. Repair manuals can be found for every type of device imaginable. The aim of the site is to help people "save money, help the environment and care for those things". The site makes money by selling parts for devices.

Card magnifier as iPhone close-up lens

This is a good idea - using one of those card-thin magnifying lenses as a zoom or macro lens for your iPhone 3G camera. The situation - you want to take a pic of a picture in a book but can't get the ideal focal length right. Enter the magnifier - just place it against your camera lens, and snap away. The attached sample pic shows great improvement. Its easy to keep in your phone sleeve too!

Make a Chest Support for your DSLR out of PVP pipe

Taken from Instructables, via Lifehacker, this one's about making a PVP pipe camera support for cameras. Some of us have problems keeping cameras steady, whether it is cos we're older, taking low-light/ long exposure shots, have heavy DSLR cameras, or just generally can't keep our camera steady (I'll admit to that). This DIY puts together a few PVP pipes into a camera chest-rest.

Check it out here.

How to Waterproof your camera

I'm not sure how well this works, since underwater pressure builds the deeper you go, however, the author mentions its only for snorkelling depths. But it's worth a look, albeit a whacky one.

Rubbing Cut Potatoes keeps surfaces frm fogging up

According to this article on Lifehacker, it seems rubbing cut potatoes on glass (goggles, windscreen, toilet doors, etc) will keep the glass surface from fogging up.

I am skeptical about this, since there is a concern regarding the residue and starch leftover, but I think I might actually give this a try to see how it works.

iPhone speaker with bass - from a glass cup

Taken from Lifehacker:
I rarely use my iPhone to blast music but when me and a group of my buddies were all listening to a new song, one of them (who also has an iPhone) grabbed my phone and a cup... it was amazing the difference and I just sat there for a good ten seconds straight blankly staring at him trying to figure out why I never thought of this before. The iPhone's speaker is down facing and the cup adds a lot of bass and volume—especially when set on a hard surface (like in the shower, you can hear it over the water!).
