A new app for the iPhone could soon provide a real alternative to SMS. GPush will use iPhone's push notification to inform users of a new message received, faster than the original Mail setting with 15 mins at the fastest. Users will then have to access their email as per normal, but it beats having to check it all the time. From comments, it seems this push method will not drain your battery as much as polling does.
